SPS All-City Honor Band 2018
Anticipation. Nervousness. My arms are shaking while I hold up my flute. Butterflies flutter around my stomach going every direction. I look to my right, and I see my fellow performers. We all have the same look on our face, for our cheeks are bright red and our arms and sore and tired. It’s time. The lights get brighter, and I can’t see the audience anymore. My flute reflects the light right onto my music. I’m ready.
The Springfield All-City Honor Band is a 100 piece band that is put together with 7th and 8th-grade students from all ten middle schools in the Springfield school district. Students have the opportunity to submit a video showcasing the audition material on their instrument. The videos are judged by middle school band directors, but only 100 students get chosen. This year there were over 200 auditions! The judges then post the list of students and their chair placement.
On Friday, all 100 students had a practice together at Central High School. We got to spend the whole school day playing music. On Saturday, we all practiced again for seven hours, then performed in the afternoon. The students did not have any time prior to Friday and Saturday to practice together. At our concert, we performed four songs that are very advanced and technical. Therefore, our practices were very challenging and firm. The guest clinician was Ms. Diana Williams. She is an amazing conductor who had taught bands in Missouri, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas.
From our band at Pleasant View Middle School, we had 5 students get selected for the honor band.
Megan Bolen - 11th Chair Clarinet
Kenzie Keeter - 17th Chair Clarinet
Aria Thomas - 18th Chair Clarinet
Natalie Vaughn (Me!) - 1st Chair Flute
Annie German - 3rd Chair Flute
My experience the past two years in the Honor Band has been amazing. I love the challenge and the teamwork. I appreciate Ms. Liz Pace for selecting me and my audition to be apart of this amazing learning opportunity.
Special thanks to our sponsors for making our event completely free, including food, transportation, matching shirts, and everything else to all students and directors: Palen Music Center, Springfield Music, & Hoover Music!
